Protectli V1610: Suricata Regression and Policy Replays

I kept engine regressions separate from replays of the installed policy. That distinction matters here: the upstream regression cases passed, while the installed rules produced zero alerts on 20 unchanged upstream captures.

This page keeps the shared controls, retained measurements, failures, and comparison limits together. The linked files are there when you need the underlying table or method.

What you can compare here

These are offline engine runs on the Vault. Upstream cases carry their own rules and assertions; installed-policy runs use the appliance snapshot. Offline drop records show rule selection, while physical-wire blocking is documented in the separate inline test.

SSH fixture requires Suricata 9.

23 distinct cases passed. One SSH case was skipped because it requires Suricata 9; it is not included as a pass.

Completed replays

Unchanged upstream PCAPs. (captures)
Observed alerts
0 alerts
Actual installed-policy outcome.

All 20 replays completed with zero alerts. These captures and the installed policy did not produce alert coverage in this run.

Original virtual-capture replay

Original invalid TCP checksums retained

Published result

Measured on Protectli V1610 · Owned Vault test

Original cases
8 captures
Original packets preserved.
UID alerts
1 alert
Allowed SID 2100498 from the original HTTP replay.

The HTTP UID fixture produced one allowed signature alert and other cases produced no alerts. Invalid TCP checksums prevent using this original replay to infer HTTPS stream inspection.

Replay engine counters.
HTTP allowed alerts
3 alerts
Includes SID 2100498.
HTTPS TLS events
1 event
TLS-parser evidence; zero UID alerts.

All eight corrected replays completed with zero invalid TCP checksums. HTTP produced three allowed alerts including the UID signature; HTTPS produced one TLS event without a UID alert.

Four enabled TLS drop rules

Expected drop matches
4 of 4
Four exact-SNI positives. (fixtures)
Expected nonmatches
5 of 5
Four suffix negatives and one benign control. (fixtures)

Four exact names produced blocked matches and drop records. Four suffix negatives and one reserved-domain control avoided those matches; all nine met the authored expectations.

Results and method

Controls

  • OISF suricata-verify pinned at ddab1fde8de8dca2eb53f12e61a7aa4a4a4f133a; engine 8.0.7.
  • Installed-policy replay used 11 byte-identical rule files and 273 independently matched resolved configuration fields.
  • Original virtual captures retained invalid TCP checksums. Explicit replay derivatives corrected only those checksum bytes, with original payloads, addresses, ports, sequence numbers, times and order retained.
  • Nine inert TLS fixtures used four exact SNI positives, four suffix negatives and one reserved-domain control. No external connections or malware execution.
  • A missing YAML include, guessed rule path and later artifact-export import failure remain in the retained record.

What this run established

  • $23 upstream cases passed; the SSH case requiring Suricata 9 was skipped.
  • $All 20 installed-policy upstream replays completed with zero alerts. That observation does not turn them into detected attacks.
  • $Checksum-controlled HTTP produced three allowed alerts, including the UID signature. HTTPS produced one TLS event and no UID alert.
  • $All nine TLS fixtures met their exact expectations: four blocked/drop matches and five negatives without those matches.
  • $Sampled replay peaks were 58 °C for installed-policy/TLS and 59 °C for checksum-controlled replay, below the 75 °C guard.
