Privacy policy

What I collect and why

When you send a contact message, I receive your name, email, subject, message, and any details you choose to include so I can respond. When you subscribe to The Lab Notes, Buttondown receives your email address and the website-signup tag so it can manage your subscription and send issues. The site and its hosting provider also process ordinary request and security data, such as IP address, browser information, and request time, to deliver and protect the site.

Services that receive data

Contact forms submit to Web3Forms, which routes the message to my inbox. Newsletter submissions go to Buttondown. Hosting providers process requests needed to serve the site. When analytics is on, Google Analytics receives usage data associated with your browser and pages visited. These services process data under their own applicable terms and privacy practices. I do not sell contact or newsletter information.

Cookies and tracking choices

Google Analytics runs by default for visitors outside the UK, European Economic Area, and Switzerland, including when the hosting provider cannot determine a country. For visits identified in those regions, analytics stays off until you choose “Allow analytics.” You can turn analytics off or change your choice anytime through the compact Privacy choices control at the bottom of the page or Cookie settings in the footer. A saved choice is stored in your browser's local storage. When your browser exposes a Global Privacy Control signal to this page, analytics stays off. Required hosting and security functions may still process request data. This site does not use the older browser Do Not Track header as a separate control. Other parties may collect activity data across sites when their services are enabled; Google Analytics is the optional service used here.

Retention and your requests

Contact messages are kept while needed to answer and maintain relevant correspondence, then removed when no longer needed, subject to legitimate recordkeeping or security needs. Buttondown keeps subscription information until you unsubscribe or request deletion, subject to its necessary records. Hosting and analytics retention depend on the configured service settings. I will post material changes on this page with a new effective date. For a material change affecting newsletter subscribers, I may also notify them by email when appropriate.
